A banner day—high page count, many cast, stacked sets—looks efficient on paper and brutal on the floor if nobody had time to prep. Pacing those days on the stripboard is an AD skill: you still
Stunt days, VFX plate days, and specialty-equipment blocks are not footnotes. They change call times, unit structure, insurance notes, and how much else you can schedule that day. If they hide inside a normal dialogue
Pickup days are not leftovers you shove at the end of the board. They are intentional strips that protect picture lock, cover ADR-adjacent inserts, and give the AD a clean path from principal photography into
New PAs, department heads and first-time producers are often handed a stripboard and expected to understand it on the spot. It looks like a colorful spreadsheet, but every strip is a compressed scene report. Once
Two constraints decide whether a daybreak survives contact with reality: who is available, and how far the unit must travel. Ignore either and you inherit overtime, holding fees, or a company move that erases the
Traditional stripboards earned their place: color-coded scene strips, magnetic boards, and later desktop apps taught generations of ADs how to order a shoot. The limitation is not craft—it is scale. Manual sorting, copy-paste call sheets,
Sets are not offices. Wi-Fi drops in basements, location vans lose signal between takes, and the first AD still needs a live stripboard. Film scheduling that only works in a browser tab fails the moment
A shooting schedule without a linked shot list is half a plan. Assistant directors know the risk: a daybreak that fits pages on paper but overruns once camera setups, lenses, and VFX plates are counted.
Episodic television rarely lives in a single script file. A season means multiple episodes, overlapping cast, shared locations, and directors who rotate week to week. When each episode sits in its own spreadsheet or PDF
A shooting schedule only works if everyone reads the same story. Cast needs Day Out of Days (DOOD) clarity. Department heads skim one-liners. ADs park unshot scenes in a boneyard instead of deleting them. When
The call sheet is where the shooting schedule becomes a human plan: who arrives when, where to park, what scenes are up, and which departments prepare first. Too often that document is rebuilt by hand—copying
Every producer knows the hidden cost of a poorly ordered shoot: company moves. Each time cast, crew, and trucks relocate between locations in a single day, you burn hours that never appear on screen. Traditional
