1. Suspense and Surprises

First and foremost, your script must consist of several suspense and surprises. This is what your audience is for, and you must serve it to them.

2.Emotions

Emotions are the foundation of the thriller genre. Adding emotions like sadness, angst, irritability, etc., are a build-up for your next scene. These can also be portrayed using physical traits, such as the sweaty forehead or shaky hands for fear raised eyebrows or clinching fists for anger.

3.Protagonist

THRILLER NEEDS PROTAGONISTS!!!!! Having a protagonist makes it easier for the audience to hold a perspective and see the protagonist’s happenings.

4.Make the audience think they know.

To make the audience think they know what is happening in a story, a writer can use a variety of techniques such as:

  • Planting red herrings: These are false clues that lead the audience in the wrong direction and keep them guessing.
  • Creating multiple suspects: By having multiple characters that could potentially be the culprit, the audience will be unsure of who the true villain is.
  • Using misdirection: This is when the writer leads the audience to focus on one aspect of the story, while the true plot is happening elsewhere.
  • Creating a sense of familiarity: By using common tropes and archetypes in the story, the audience may think they know what to expect, but the writer can subvert those expectations.
  • Creating complex characters: By giving the characters multiple layers and motivations, the audience will be unsure of who to trust and what their true intentions are.

It’s important to keep in mind that keeping the audience in the dark but not too much to confuse them, and also revealing information at the right time to keep the story moving forward.

5.Change of emotion

Following the above example, a change of emotion is always good for the plot. For instance, discovering the girlfriend’s true intentions makes the protagonist scared of her and is full of hatred instead of finding comfort in her. This change of emotion makes the viewers more involved in the story and sympathize with the protagonist.

6.THE LINE

THE LINE is what you ought not to forget while writing a thriller plot. A line like “ It was You.” “You made me do it”, or a really catchy phrase associated with the story of your script is what enhances it.
